Contour lines are how flat drawings describe three-dimensional ground: each line joins points at the same height, so the pattern of lines is a picture of the site's shape. Read them fluently and a topographical survey tells you where water goes, where the muck-shifting will be, and what the foundations are in for - before anyone visits site.
Reading the lines
- Close together = steep ground; far apart = gentle slopes; evenly spaced = a constant gradient
- Each line carries a level value (metres above datum) - the numbers tell you which way is downhill
- Lines that form closed loops are hills (values rising inward) or hollows (values falling inward)
- V-shapes pointing uphill trace valleys and watercourses; V-shapes pointing downhill trace ridges
- Lines never cross - where they look like they touch, the ground is near-vertical (a bank or retaining wall)
What engineers do with them
On a development site, the topographical survey's contours and spot levels drive most of the civil engineering: drainage design needs falls, and falls come from levels; earthworks design balances cut against fill to set economical plot and road levels; sloping sites generate retaining structures; and finished floor levels - often fixed by flood risk requirements - are set against surveyed ground. A site that looks flat to the eye but falls 1.5m corner-to-corner behaves very differently on paper, and the contours are where that shows first.
