SuDS - Sustainable Drainage Systems

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) manage rainfall close to where it lands - slowing it, storing it and, where the ground allows, soaking it away - instead of piping it straight to a sewer. For most new development, a SuDS-led drainage strategy is now a planning requirement, not an option.

SuDS techniques we design

  • Soakaways and infiltration systems, designed from percolation testing
  • Permeable paving and sub-base storage
  • Attenuation tanks, crates and oversized pipes with flow control
  • Swales, basins and rain gardens on larger sites
  • Discharge hierarchies and agreements with water companies where infiltration isn't viable

The practical reality in Yorkshire

SuDS policy assumes infiltration; much of West Yorkshire's clay refuses it. Real SuDS design here is about applying the discharge hierarchy honestly - test infiltration first, then attenuate and restrict discharge to watercourse or sewer. We produce the strategy, calculations and details, and take them through the lead local flood authority's comments to sign-off.
